Deleted Data Recovery from Memory Card

Memory card is an external digital storage medium, which is popular because of its compatibility and capacity. Other external flash drives like pen drives are available in different looks and sizes, with capacity upto 500 GB but memory cards are of different types depending on which device it is used as mentioned below:

  • SD Card (Secure Disk): These types of memory cards are used in digital cameras, handheld computers, and mobile phones. It is available in capacities between 16 MB and 1 GB, and still growing. It typically measures 32 mm x 24 mm x 2.1 mm.
  • MiniSD Card: Typically found in many newer mobiles. They are 21.5 mm x 20 mm x 1.4 mm in size and generally provide 16MB to 256MB of storage.
  • MicroSD Card: Mainly used in mobile phones and other small handheld devices. It is available in capacities up to 4GB, and is roughly 1/4th the size of the SD card.
  • MMC (MultiMediaCard): Often used in place of SD Cards, measures 32 mm x 24 mm x 1.4mm with transfer speeds of up to 2.5MB/s.
  • SmartMedia: Introduced in 1995, not widely used now a days. They measure 45 mm x 37 mm x 0.76 mm in size and are available in 16MB, 32MB, and 128MB versions.
  • Compact flash: Introduced in 1994 and supports 3.3V and 5V operation and it is used with adapter. It exists in 42.8mm x 36.4mm x 3.3 mm or 42.8mm x 36.4mm x 5.5 mm size.

Memory card functions by implementing the USB mass storage device class because of which most modern operating systems can read and write to them without installing device drivers. It is small, light and has no moving parts. The weakest point of memory card is at its socket connectors, which are used when you remove and reinsert the memory card into a device. The drawback with the small size is that they are easily misplaced or otherwise lost. Logical failure of memory card is when your memory card is recognized by the system BIOS or disk manager, but data in it is inaccessible. It happens because of file system corruption, virus attack, accident format, deletion of key files, etc. Logical data loss issues can be tackled using third party utility like Memory card recovery software which can easily perform data recovery after format error in memory card and other data loss issues. If the system BIOS does not identify the memory card and if memory card is inoperative, then it is physical failure. It happens when memory card is physically damaged like if it is broken etc.

Some scenarios describing how files can be deleted from memory card are mentioned below:

  • Accidental deletion: You might have accidentally deleted or erased a particular image file when your card is showing “not enough memory”. In case, if you have connected your memory card to computer and while viewing, you might have deleted the image unintentionally.
  • During file transfer: When you are transferring data from memory card to your computer or vice versa, there are possibilities of losing the data.
  • Corrupted memory card: If you are using same memory card in different mobiles or digital cameras, there are chances of it getting corrupted. In this case, BIOS may detect your memory card but data becomes inaccessible. In such cases, memory card file recovery software for Windows or Mac is the perfect solution and recover images and other lost files.
  • Improper handling: Inserting or removing the card improperly from digital cameras, phones or card reader can affect the files in the card. Trying to insert at the wrong port can also lead to data loss. If you have lost data from SDHC card under such circumstances, then you will have to recover data from SDHC card.

As memory card is external flash device, if you have accidentally deleted few images or other content when it is connected to your PC, the image does not go to Recycle Bin, so it is difficult to restore the files without a data recovery software. Few precautions you need to follow if you want to recover lost files from memory card or perform memory card recovery after format, are as follows:

  • Do not overwrite: If you have deleted a particular file or image from memory card, the disk space occupied by the data gets marked as available. This disk space can now be overwritten by new data, resulting in loss of data that previously existed on the memory card.
  • Use data recovery software: It is important to make use of effective data recovery software to ensure complete recovery of lost data. Memory card recovery is one such good memory card data restoration tool for Windows OS.

Memory card recovery software supports recovery of JPEG, JPG, TIFF, TIF, PNG, BMP, GIF, and PSD image format. It also supports recovery of images in RAW formats like CR2, CRW of Canon, ARW, SR2 of Sony and many other image formats of different manufactures. This flash card recovery tool for CF card supports recovery of music files like MP3, MP4, WAV, MIDI, AIFF, AIFC, AIF, RA, AMR and video files like AVI, MP4, MOV, MPEG, MPG, M4V, 3G2, 3GP, RM. You can use free demo version of the memory card recovery software for SD card to scan and to view all recoverable files. With the licensed version, you can save the recovered data. It is the best Mac recovery software for memory card, which can restore deleted or lost media files from any severe data loss situations. The software supports data recovery from different flash cards like SD, xD, SDHC, MMC, Memory Sticks, etc. Hence, you can retrieve data from memory stick after deletion or loss of data from it and to know more about this operation, click here.
